Audit Spotlight: Why This Brand’s Website Performance Was Killing Their Sales (And How We Fixed It)

You can have the best products in the world, but if your website loads like it's powered by a hamster on a wheel, you're haemorrhaging sales.

That's exactly what we discovered when a premium British homeware brand came to us, completely baffled. Their products were gorgeous, their Instagram was popping, and their customer service was top-notch. Yet their online sales were absolutely dire.

Spoiler alert: Their website was the problem. And it was costing them thousands every single month.

The Brand That Had Everything (Except Sales)

Let's call them "Luxe Home" (not their real name, but you get the idea). They'd been trading for three years, building a loyal following at markets and pop-up shops. When they launched their ecommerce site in early 2025, they expected online sales to take off.

Instead, crickets.

They'd invested heavily in paid ads, brought on a social media manager, and even worked with an influencer or two. Traffic was coming to the site, about 15,000 monthly visitors. But conversions? A measly 0.8%. For context, a decent ecommerce conversion rate sits around 2-3%.

Something was fundamentally broken, and our digital marketing assessment was about to uncover exactly what.

What the Audit Revealed: A Perfect Storm of Performance Problems

When we ran our comprehensive audit, covering everything from technical SEO to user experience, the website performance pillar lit up like a Christmas tree. In a bad way.

Here's what we found:

Homepage Load Time: 8.3 seconds

Yes, you read that right. Eight. Point. Three. Seconds. On mobile, it was even worse, nearly 11 seconds. Research from Google shows that 53% of mobile users abandon sites that take longer than three seconds to load. Luxe Home was making visitors wait nearly four times that long.

Bounce Rate: 73%

Nearly three-quarters of visitors were leaving without viewing a second page. When we dug into the Google PageSpeed Insights data, the correlation was crystal clear: slow load times were directly causing people to bail.

Checkout Abandonment: 89%

Of the brave souls who actually added items to their cart, 89% never completed the purchase. The checkout process required seven, yes, seven: separate steps, each loading slower than the last.

Mobile Performance Score: 23/100

According to PageSpeed Insights, their mobile performance was in the red zone. Meanwhile, 68% of their traffic was coming from mobile devices.

The maths was brutal but simple: They were paying to drive traffic to a website that was actively repelling customers.

The Fix: From Frustrating to Frictionless

Our recommendations focused on three key areas, all backed by established UX best practices from the Nielsen Norman Group:

1. Speed Optimisation (The Big Wins)

We tackled the most impactful issues first:

  • Image compression: Their product photos were gorgeous but absolutely massive: some over 5MB each. We compressed them without quality loss, reducing file sizes by 80%.
  • Lazy loading: Images now only load as users scroll down, rather than all at once.
  • Code minification: Cleaned up bloated CSS and JavaScript files.
  • CDN implementation: Distributed content delivery to reduce server response time.
  • Removed unnecessary plugins: They had 47 WordPress plugins installed. We cut it down to 18 essential ones.

2. Checkout Process Redesign

Seven steps became three. We implemented:

  • Guest checkout option: No forced account creation.
  • Single-page checkout: All information on one screen.
  • Autofill support: For addresses and payment details.
  • Clear progress indicators: So users knew exactly where they were in the process.

3. Mobile-First Restructure

Since most traffic was mobile, we redesigned with thumbs in mind:

  • Larger touch targets: Buttons that were actually tappable.
  • Simplified navigation: Three-click rule to any product.
  • Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP): For key landing pages.

The entire overhaul took six weeks. And the results? Absolutely worth it.

The Results: When Good UX Meets Good Products

We implemented changes in phases and tracked everything religiously. Here's what happened:

Load Time: 8.3s → 1.9s

Nearly a 78% improvement. On mobile, we went from 11 seconds to 2.4 seconds. Suddenly, the site felt snappy and professional.

Bounce Rate: 73% → 42%

Still room for improvement, but this represented thousands more people actually browsing the catalogue each month.

Checkout Abandonment: 89% → 34%

This was the big one. By streamlining the checkout process, we more than doubled the completion rate.

Conversion Rate: 0.8% → 3.2%

A 300% increase in conversions. With the same traffic levels, Luxe Home went from roughly 120 monthly orders to 480.

Revenue Impact: £18,000/month → £72,000/month

Based on their average order value of £150, this translated to an additional £54,000 in monthly revenue. Over £600,000 annually. From website fixes alone.

The Lessons (Because Context Matters)

This case study isn't just about one brand's website woes. It's a pattern we see constantly in our audits:

Your traffic sources don't matter if the destination is broken. Luxe Home was spending £3,000/month on ads, driving people to a site that actively prevented purchases. That's like opening a beautiful shop and then padlocking the door.

Performance is a feature, not a nice-to-have. Fast load times aren't just about keeping users happy: they're about keeping revenue flowing. Amazon found that every 100ms of latency cost them 1% in sales. For most businesses, that's substantial money.

Technical issues hide in plain sight. The Luxe Home team knew something was wrong, but they were looking at content and pricing, not page speed. A proper digital marketing assessment reveals the issues you don't even know to look for.

Mobile-first isn't optional anymore. With over two-thirds of traffic coming from phones, designing for desktop first is designing for the minority. Your mobile experience needs to be exceptional, not just "good enough."

If you're running regular checks on your digital presence (like our Google Business Profile 5-Minute Routine), you should be applying the same diligence to your website performance. And if social media is part of your marketing mix, make sure you're not driving traffic from polished platforms to a broken site: our Social Media Audit 101 can help ensure all your channels work together seamlessly.

Your Website Might Be the Problem (And You Don't Even Know It)

Here's the uncomfortable truth: Most business owners don't realise their website is costing them sales. They see traffic coming in, maybe even some conversions, and assume things are "fine."

But "fine" isn't good enough. Not when small improvements can literally quadruple your revenue.

Ask yourself:

  • Do you know your actual page load time?
  • Have you tested your checkout process on a mobile device recently?
  • When was the last time you ran a comprehensive digital marketing assessment?

If you're unsure about any of these, you're likely leaving money on the table.

The good news? Unlike Luxe Home's situation, you now know what to look for. Tools like Google PageSpeed Insights are free and take minutes to run. You can uncover the same issues we found: before they cost you months of lost revenue.

And if you want the full picture: the comprehensive audit that looks at not just website performance but SEO, social media, content, and strategy, well, that's exactly what we do.

Because your products deserve a website that actually sells them.
